]]> Carbonless copy paper (also known as  non-carbon copy paper, and NCR paper)  is a common alternative to carbon based paper. It’s used to create a copy of an original, handwritten, or vitally important document without using any electronic machines such as a copier, printer, or photocopier.

The carbonless paper process was originally designed as a biodegradable alternative to traditional carbon paper. It was invented by two chemists, who were working for the NCR Corporation.


How it works

The back of the top sheet of paper is coated with micro-encapsulated dye. The middle sheet of the pack is coated with a clay that quickly reacts with the dye to form a permanent mark. When a person writes on the sheets, the pressure from the point of the writing instrument breaks the miniature micro-capsules so their dye covers an area of the paper.

Health concerns
One of chemicals traditionally used in carbonless paper is polychlorinated biphenyls (commonly called PCB). In the mid 1970′s, the use of polychlorinated biphenyls in manufacturing was banned due to health and environmental concerns.

A 10 year study conducted by the University of Florida indicated that chronic exposure to carbonless copy paper can lead to potential long term health problems such as asthma, eczema, and bronchitis.
